Sub-municipal office transforms to Zwemcentrum Rotterdam

Daring choice, surprising transformation

The new 50-meter swimming pool in the former sub-municipal office has been completed. With this unique example of reuse, the existing building (with historic value) is retained and unnecessary new construction is prevented. The swimming pool is centrally located in a busy spot, which will attract a lot of extra visitors. In return, the pool 'gives' a lot of urban dynamics back to its environment. It will become an attraction for the entire area.

Swimming centre with 25- and 50- metres pool

In addition to a 25-metres pool, a 50-metres competition pool (which is filled with 3.8 million litres of water) was added, being the first in Rotterdam. The pool is mainly used for competitions, school swimming and recreational swimming, whether or not in the context of an association and there are activities for target groups. On the first floor you can find the pools, so there is space on the ground floor for catering, shops and other facilities.

Ready to use

The brand new Zwemcentrum Rotterdam in Charlois opens on January 22nd, but before that moment, a lot has to be done (moving in, testing of school swimming, etc). That is why the swimming pool must be 'ready for use' a month earlier.

Hart van Zuid

This transformation is part of the Hart van Zuid area development project. Hart van Zuid will be the lively center of Rotterdam Zuid. In addition to the swimming pool, we also work on the expansion of Rotterdam Ahoy. Ballast Nedam and Heijmans are jointly responsible for the design, realization and financing of the area development, including a maintenance contract until 2043.
