Public transport terminal Breda is the successor of Kustwerk Katwijk as BNA Best Building. Breda towers above the other projects in complexity and format. We congratulate architect Koen van Velsen and consortium partner Hurks with this wonderful result.
The design deals with many different space concepts: the integration of large-scale infrastructure, urban housing, public space. "It feels like that around the building so much more can arise. The partners are challenged to excel, and cooperate more. This is reflected in de building.” With this monumental building, the standard for the further (re) development of the station area has been set. The jury is deeply impressed by the giant building, which feels like a town. The addition of apartments, which land as 'paws' in the esplanade and the transition from the station to the surrounding neighbourhood, a find according to the jury, as well as the huge windows that look on the platforms, and the spectacular parking on the roof.
This is much more than a train station; it includes a bus station, a passageway, a car park on the roof, 9,000 m2 shops, 20,000 offices, 147 apartments in 4 blocks, bicycle parking (6000 units), 2 squares. Architect Koen van Velsen assembled all these functions in a brick building built over the railway track and also literally connecting the center with the Belcrum district via the new pedestrian crossing. Together with Hurks we have built OV Terminal Breda on behalf of ProRail (NS Stations, Breda Municipality, Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment).
BNA Best Building of the Year is a Dutch architectural award for architects who add value to clients and society. It is by far the most important Dutch architectural prize and is awarded by BNA, Branch Association of Dutch Architectural Agencies.
