Social responsibility

Business is a social activity. This rightly imposes obligations, sets boundaries and demands that standards and values be observed. Ballast Nedam is fully aware of this. That is why we endorse international regulations and agreements that have been expressed by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Ballast Nedam wholeheartedly endorses the requirements that these organisations set:
  • Employees work of their own free will with no obligation.
  • Companies lay down the individual or collective terms of employment in a contract.
  • Employers do not discriminate when taking on new personnel.
  • Child labour is not admissible.
  • Companies respect human rights.
  • The safety and health of employees is safeguarded.
An ethical way of working
Ballast Nedam is aware that in many countries, socially and culturally embedded situations still continue to exist that are in violation of the aforementioned basic principles. That does not alter the fact that we are doing everything possible to develop appropriate and practical courses of action. For example, we were the first Dutch construction firm to sign an international covenant on the rights of employees.

Ballast Nedam also attaches great importance to an ethical, responsible way of working in other areas. We comply strictly with competition rules. We employ a rigid safety and environmental policy. When it comes to sustainable building, we are a forerunner, and we take our social responsibility towards employees very seriously too.
