Schiphol's most sustainable pier

The result of smart material choices and techniques

Airside Pier

The brand new Airside Pier sets the standard for the future of Schiphol Airport. After completion, the pier will have eight gates at a total of 57,000 square metres, which is as big as eleven football fields. Airside Pier will then be Schiphol's most sustainable part of the entire building. This ambition is a challenge that suits Ballast Nedam well.

An unprecedentedly large assignment

Once the pier is in use, five narrowbody aircraft can park on the north side. On the south side, there will be room for three widebody aircraft or six narrowbody aircraft. Meanwhile, travellers with different security statuses can move smoothly and safely through the three different floors. Ballast Nedam is responsible for the large building, connecting with the B-pier, the gatehouses with passenger bridges and the 57,000 square metres of pavements for aircraft stands. For this multidisciplinary project, we have combined our expertise with Turkish company TAV Construction, which is specialised in airports.

Smart choices and high ambitions

The choice of materials is smart and sustainable. This results in, for example, ceiling blades made out of recyclable plastic and floors and seating areas made of bamboo. The façade on the sunny side of the pier is a double curtain wall. Together with the underground cold and heat storage, this façade energy-efficiently manages the climate in the pier. In addition, the toilets are flushed with rainwater, and no less than 5,000 m2 of solar panels will be installed on the roof. With these choices and techniques, Schiphol strives to achieve the LEED GOLD status in the field of sustainability.
