Nearshore windpark

Unique: monopiles on land

Windpark Maasvlakte 2

On the seawall of the Rotterdam port area, Ballast Nedam installed turbine foundations for Windpark Maasvlakte 2. Commissioned by Eneco, we have provided the connection to the purchase station and the park cabling. The wind farm comprises 22 wind turbines and generates more than 400 GWh of green electricity annually. Rijkswaterstaat is the client for the wind farm, owns the seawall and purchases all the power for 25 years.

Maasvlakte 2 wind farm was completed in a remarkably short time: construction started in February 2022 and will end 9 months later, in November 2022.

Project in the surf

Maasvlakte 2 contains 22 wind turbines with a total capacity of 116.7 MW. The special feature of this project is that the turbines are located on two types of sea defences: soft and hard. The soft seawall consists of dunes and beach. Twelve wind turbines are placed on this in the surf. This means they will sometimes be in the water and sometimes on land. The remaining ten wind turbines are on the hard seawall, consisting of a dike and a block dam.

Unique: monopile on land

For the realisation of the wind turbines on the hard seawall, a concrete foundation with a reinforced soil construction was chosen, placed against the body of the dike. The wind turbines on the soft sea wall have a foundation with monopiles. A proven offshore concept that Ballast Nedam has translated to the realisation of such foundations at a nearshore location. And that is a first for the wind sector, because for the first time on land, a wind turbine was founded on a monopile.

Thanks to these unique solutions, we ensured a smaller impact on the beach and less nuisance for the surrounding area. In addition, the foundations have a slender character, leaving more space for recreation around the wind turbines.

Working outside the storm season

Weather conditions play a major role in offshore projects. Maasvlakte 2 is no exception, so we planned most work outside the storm season. This meant that on the seawall, we were hampered as little as possible by strong winds, rain or the waves and tide.
