A27 improvement works officially launched

After preparations in recent years, the shovel symbolically went into the ground on Wednesday 31 January at the Raamsdonksveer water tower for the improvement of the A27 Houten - Hooipolder motorway.

Minister Mark Harbers of Infrastructure and Water Management did so together with administrators from the region, construction consortia ALSÉÉN (Ballast Nedam and Fluor Infrastructure) and De Groene Waarden and Rijkswaterstaat.

Visible work

The work on the A27 between Houten and Hooipolder will become more visible in 2024. Traffic will experience large-scale asphalting work from mid-March onwards. This will require 10 weekend closures in 2024. Work on new viaducts required for the expansion of Knooppunt Hooipolder will follow later this year.

Out of the traffic jam top 3

This symbolic starting moment marks an important first step in tackling congestion on the A27 between Houten and Hooipolder. The A27 between Houten and Hooipolder is one of the most important traffic arteries in the Netherlands. This route is in the traffic jam top 3 every day. Rijkswaterstaat wants to tackle this together with the region. This will allow traffic to flow better in the future and there will be fewer traffic jams and cut-through traffic in the region. This will make the route not only faster, but also safer.

Project manager Koen Verdonk is excited to get started: "For years, this project was on my wish list, the A27. Finally we are ready for it to really start. Together with ALSÉÉN colleagues, Rijkswaterstaat, many stakeholders and a critical environment, we will show what we can do in the coming years. I am super motivated to get started on this."

Everdingen - Hooipolder

Ballast Nedam and Fluor Infrastructure are joining forces under the name ALSÉÉN to tackle 40 kilometres of motorway between Everdingen and Hooipolder. Towards Utrecht, the A27 will get three lanes between the Hooipolder interchange and Everdingen. Between Werkendam and Scheiwijk, the lanes will be regular and the rest of the route will have a rush-hour lane. In the other direction, there will be 4 regular lanes between Scheiwijk and Werkendam. The other parts of the section will have 3 lanes, including 1 rush-hour lane.
