Major renovation on the A15

Future-proof through renewal and sustainability improvements to the tunnel

Noordtunnel renovation

With over 30 years of service, the Noordtunnel on the A15 is due for a major overhaul. Ballast Nedam Infra BV will carry out the renovation. Virtually all technical installations will be replaced, and the concrete, asphalt, and heat-resistant cladding will be upgraded.

What is the challenge?

The biggest challenge of the Noordtunnel project is minimising the impact on existing traffic and the surrounding environment during the renovation. In addition, the project must meet complex technical requirements and ensure the tunnel is future-proof.

Schedule

The physical works on the Noordtunnel will take place during the summer periods of 2027 and 2028, during carefully planned closure periods. This is to minimise the impact on traffic.

Approach

This project aligns with the theme of Sustainability.

  1. Preparatory works
Thorough inspection and additional investigations to assess the current condition of the tunnel.

  2. Design and planning
Refining the design and developing a detailed execution plan.

  3. Technical installations
Replacing all technical systems to meet the latest safety standards.

  4. Concrete and asphalt works
Upgrading the concrete and asphalt to extend the tunnel’s lifespan.

  5. Heat-Resistant cladding
Applying new heat-resistant cladding for enhanced safety.

  6. Testing and completion
Extensive testing of all systems and finalising the renovation works.

  7. Maintenance
Ballast Nedam will remain responsible for the tunnel’s maintenance until the end of 2039.

Intended outcome

The renovation of the Noordtunnel will result in a significant improvement in the tunnel’s safety and sustainability. The upgraded tunnel will comply with the latest technical and safety standards, contributing to more efficient and safer traffic flow.
