A future proof academic hospital

Maximum quality on a tight construction site

New Building for Erasmus Medical Centre

In the heart of Rotterdam we built a new future proof academic hospital on a tiny construction site, right next to another hospital that will remain operational during construction. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity according to the board of the Erasmus Medical Centre. The design therefore requires the highest standards in functionality, appearance, hygiene, safety and construction. A great challenge for us.

  • 120 high office tower
  • 300 longs glass roofed area
To be able to build in the current location, we first had to make room. That is why we adapted the old location with small renovations, footbridges, relocated entrances and modified access routes. And even then, our working area remained extremely small. Also because in the middle of the construction pit a building remained where we worked until the move.

Hospital operational during construction

The current hospital remained in use during the new building, as did the immediate surroundings. So we had to take account of patients - some of them extremely vulnerable - as well as many visitors, suppliers, local residents and passers-by. We took various measures to limit the inconvenience, such as soundproofing the pile drivers, proper consultation with employees and local residents and monitoring routes and safety.

Logistical puzzle

Due to the limited working space, we decided to reserve space in the Rotterdam port area for the storage of trucks. We could call them up when they were needed. The new-build plan was already challenging, but became even more so as various adjustments were made to the design during construction. For example, the client added a complete extra building. No problem, we 'just' added it within the original planning.
