Refurbishment of Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam

Bringing a landmark back into modern times

Johan Cruijff ArenA

In 2020, four European Championship matches were played in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Before that time, the ArenA wanted to expand. Not in capacity, but in quality. That is why the stadium was rebuilt and visitor flows were given room during major football matches and other events, such as concerts.

In a nutshell: the Johan Cruijff ArenA has been given more comfort, more modern facilities and more space than twenty years ago, when we built the ArenA.

The show must go on

In phase 1, the approach to the east side of the stadium, we created much more space on the walkways behind the stands of the 1st and 2nd ring. We also added extra lifts, toilets, catering points and escalators. The number of seats remained the same. The larger walkway means that the stadium also changes on the outside.

The so-called 'pillow façade' (also called an efte façade) gives the stadium a new convex shape.

We broke through walls, built over the existing road that runs under the ArenA and ensured that the matches and events could continue as usual. The show must go on!
