Multifunctional stadium in Amsterdam

Bringing a landmark back into modern times

Johan Cruijff ArenA

The renovation that has been planned for the near future will ensure that this stadium will continue to be an impressive structure and will once again live up to the ambition of being a modern and attractive stadium. This will not only imply to major soccer matches, but also other events such as concerts.

In 2020, four European Championship matches will be played in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. In preparation, the ArenA wants to expand ahead of those games. Not capacity-wise, but quality-wise, by providing more comfort, more modern facilities and more space than twenty years ago, when the ArenA was built. Since visitor flows now occasionally grind to a halt at busy times, it has been decided to expand the gallery to create more space and comfort.

The show must go on

Together with the main contractor and builder, we will enter phase 1 of the project by creating a larger gallary and a restaurant at the east side of the ArenA. We will do so by building a ‘cushion wall’ (an EFTE wall), which will transform the concave exterior of the gallery into a convex one. We are also opening up walls and building over the existing road that runs under the ArenA, whilst ensuring that matches and events can continue as usual. The show must go on!

Generating space

Visitors are reacting enthusiastically. They are proud that we are going to work on their ArenA and make it even more beautiful. Furthermore, the Johan Cruijff ArenA appreciates our open and solution-oriented collaboration. When major acts like Armin van Buuren perform, we will temporarily generate more space for the different vehicle and pedestrian traffic flows, for example by relocating fences or adjusting the work. We are now exploring the possibility of concurrently entering phase 2 (the north side) and phase 3 (the south side).
