A state-of-the-art hospital

Extremely high quality requirements and a unique partnership

Meander Medical Centre

The Meander Medical Centre in Amersfoort is a specialist hospital designed in accordance with the principles of a ‘healing environment’. Its focus is on the well-being and comfort of the patient. Private rooms, views over green spaces and the natural light that floods the building support a successful recovery process and reduce the duration of admissions.

  • 113 thousand m2 surface area
  • 4 years technical and structural maintenance
We constructed this modern hospital, in its park-like setting, between 2010 and 2013, together with the consortium 2MC3. Atelier PRO designed the various parts of the building in such a way that they meet current standards for an effective and comfortable medical centre, and can be easily adapted to changing needs in the future. The consortium is also taking care of the technical and structural maintenance of the building from 2013 to the end of 2016.

Specific medical requirements

Building a hospital is a complex challenge, due to the specific requirements that sophisticated medical techniques place on a building. High-quality standards must be met in the areas of finishing and climate control, while rooms need to be easily adaptable and future-proof. These strict conditions meant that aspects relating to the architecture, installation engineering, interior design and connections for medical equipment had to be perfectly coordinated. By working together in the form of a general partnership, we were able to take the hospital’s interests fully into account.

A different way of quality management

During this project quality control was carried out in an unconventional way. The Meander Medical Centre decided not to carry out day-to-day supervision, so it was up ourselves to meet the quality requirements. Before the work began we held meetings to agree on the quality level that everyone would be happy with at the end of the project. We then decided on the method of assessment we would use, monitored the quality level achieved by our employees and subcontractors ourselves and recorded this in writing. We are convinced that this way of quality management is the future.

Technical and structural maintenance

The Meander Medical Centre also asked us to take care of the technical and structural maintenance for a period of three years following construction, as we are familiar with the building and installations and our management organisation is well equipped to deal with this task. The fact that the construction process ran smoothly and the parties enjoyed a good working relationship was another factor in this decision. The hospital can now be confident that the building will be expertly maintained and we have a longer period to pass on our knowledge and experience to the building manager.
