Looking back at Consciously Safe Day 2023: Speak up!

What do you do when you see an unsafe situation on construction sites? We had dozens of conversations on our construction sites and in our offices on Conscious Safety Day, 29 March 2023, about speaking up about safety, addressing someone and being addressed yourself. From Groningen to Maastricht: the conversations took place everywhere.

Executives, managers, project managers, site supervisors, foremen and HSE officers were present at construction sites and work locations to emphasise the importance of speaking up and addressing colleagues. Using our own Take Feedback to Care card game, concrete situations you might encounter in practice were discussed. The card game included questions such as: 'What would you do?' And "How would you handle that?" and provided insight and awareness regarding safety on the construction site.

Having conversations more often

Besides the many positive learning experiences, the conclusion is also that there is still much to be gained around safety attitudes and behaviour. For many colleagues, it remains difficult to call each other to account on behaviour. The more we talk about safety, the more aware we become of this issue. That is why we continue to do so.

In our safety campaign Take Care, we challenge ourselves and colleagues to be mindful of each other. And to act in the right, safe way to improve safe working. This national Conscious Safety Day is a great occasion, but actually every day is a safety day.
