CO₂ half-year report: on track towards a carbon neutral Ballast Nedam

Achieving CO₂ neutrality by 2030 is our goal for our Dutch operations. In the first half of 2024, we are well on track. The CO₂ emissions from our business activities in scopes 1 and 2 have decreased by 2.1% relative to revenue compared to the same period last year.

For 2024, we aim to reduce our CO₂ emissions by 48% compared to the base year 2019. In this first half-year, our scope 1 footprint has significantly decreased compared to last year, primarily due to a substantial reduction in gasoline and diesel consumption. However, due to an increase in international activities in the first half of the year, our scope 2 footprint has risen significantly compared to last year, due to the use of more grey electricity. In the countries where we operate, the procurement of green electricity is (still) not possible.

Investing in green

To achieve our goals, we are heavily investing in green energy, emission-free equipment, an electric vehicle fleet with charging facilities, and battery storage. Additionally, this year we have focused on reducing CO₂ emissions from employee transportation. Diesel and gasoline cars are being phased out, and from 2024, all new lease cars at Ballast Nedam will be exclusively electric vehicles (EVs). By 2030, we aim to have our entire fleet be zero-emission.

Furthermore, we are striving for carbon neutral construction sites, such as the Rijnkade Arnhem project. Together with our partners, we are executing the reinforcement of this quay almost emission-free, gaining valuable experience in this area.
