Gorinchem station more easily accessible with new passenger tunnel

The new passenger tunnel at Gorinchem station has been officially opened. This project by Ballast Nedam Park & Connect and Prorail includes a lift, recognisable entrances and a side platform with a ramp. This makes the station more easily accessible for travellers with a disability.

Safety is a top priority at Ballast Nedam: relocating the bus station during construction made it possible to work safely by separating passengers and construction traffic. With the aid of 18 prefabricated tunnel elements, the tunnel could be installed in a short space of time and the tracks could be quickly released. The prefabricated stairs and steel elements were also safely placed and assembled.

Logistical challenge

"It was a major logistical challenge on a very small postage stamp," says Ballast Nedam project manager Marcel Horselenberg. "We had to execute the work almost under our own feet, but now a beautiful passenger tunnel stands in Gorinchem." The passenger tunnel connects the Haarwijk district with the historic centre of Gorinchem.
