Start of construction of 770 houses in Cartesius Utrecht

The second phase of Cartesius Utrecht has officially begun. This phase of the area development includes 770 new homes, among them social rental appartments above the monumental CAB. This start was heralded by Marja Appelman (Director of Residential Construction at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations) and Suzanne Schilderman (Alderman at the Municipality of Utrecht).

This area development transforms the former NS work and marshalling yard into a neighbourhood where people can live healthier and happier for longer. The second phase includes different housing types so that all target groups from social to luxury segment can feel at home. Phases 2 to 5, with over 2,600 homes, are being developed by Ballast Nedam Development and MRP.

Phase 2 properties include social rental flats from housing corporation Portaal and the unique flats above the monumental CAB. The CAB itself will be developed into the "Living Room of the Neighbourhood" with a supermarket, catering and the CAB Lab for research and experiments.

Green living in Cartesius

Cartesius Utrecht will get its own Cartesius Park. A green oasis in the middle of the district that will connect to a Green Loop around Cartesius. This loop will also connect other parts of the city to this new urban district. At least 30% of the district will be green to promote climate adaptation and biodiversity in the area.

Shared mobility

The houses of Cartesius Utrecht have limited energy consumption. This is partly due to a collective ground source that generates energy for hot tap water and heating. The homes are also equipped with solar panels. The neighbourhood is car-free and sustainable mobility is a given. Every new resident receives a free introductory subscription for shared mobility. There will be spacious and comfortable bicycle sheds and good cycling and walking paths. Thanks to the new bicycle tunnel under the railway, residents can also reach the city centre quickly.
