Improvement A27 Houten – Hooipolder: Contracts signed for the Merwede Bridge

Ballast Nedam, together with Fluor under the ALSÉÉN joint venture, is responsible for the realization of the new western Merwede Bridge and demolition of the existing bridge. The Merwede Bridge will feature a 260‑meter arch span and a drawbridge, ensuring both safe road traffic and continued passage for inland shipping. These works are a key step in improving traffic flow on one of the Netherlands’ most important north–south corridors.

With designs finalized and contracts signed, preparatory works are already underway, including the construction of a work island for bridge assembly and future removal of the existing structure. The phased approach prioritizes the replacement of end‑of‑life bridge while maintaining mobility on this heavily used route.

Sander Lefevre, Ballast Nedam Executive Board: “With the signing of the certificate, the construction phase of the new Merwede Bridge has officially started! This part of the A27 Houten - Hooipolder project is a technically unique undertaking that is only possible thanks to the close collaboration between Rijkswaterstaat, ALSÉÉN, our partner Fluor, and our selected supply chain partners. I greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment of our teams and employees, who have achieved this milestone.”

We are excited to contribute our expertise and collaborative mindset to this technically complex infrastructure project, working closely with our client Rijkswaterstaat and our partners.

Together, we are building sustainable, future‑ready connections that support safe and reliable mobility across the Netherlands.

Opening of the western Merwede Bridge is planned for 2031.
