New training for safe working with lifting equipment
We have initiated the new training program: 'Working with Lifting Tools.' Employees from our organisational units Laudy Bouw & Ontwikkeling and Willems Bouwbedrijf have already completed the training. They underwent two days of alternating theory and practical sessions, focusing on safe lifting practices.
Jorg Gidding foreman carpenter at Laudy Bouw & Ontwikkeling
“I have been doing this work for 25 years and, in my opinion, in a safe manner. This training has given me new insights into how it can be done and how it should actually be done. For example, how to work with a bow shackle or tackle chain, which lifting tools are suitable and how you can pick it up. I pass on the knowledge I gained during the training to my colleagues so that they can also learn from it.”
Armand Croonenberg foreman carpenter at Laudy Bouw & Ontwikkeling
“The course has made me more aware of the impact I have on lifting activities. There must be good cooperation between me and the crane operator to ensure that the work is done safely. By making correct assessments, thinking along and giving hand signals, I contribute to a safe working environment.”
The importance of training
In response to this, we engaged in discussions and developed the training program 'Working with Lifting Tools.' The training is a shorter version designed for employees who handle loads under a mobile crane using standard lifting equipment (chains and lifting slings) that does not require calculations. This training was developed in collaboration with Mammoet Academy, Laudy Bouw & Ontwikkeling, Ballast Nedam Materieel and our HSE department.
Roel van den Brandt carpenter at Willems Bouwbedrijf
“I probably thought about it too easily, but the training has given me new tools to work even more safely in practice. I learned how to correctly pick up different building materials and how to handle them. Whether the lifting straps are strong enough and what calculations we need to make to know how best to lift. A complete and useful course that I recommend to everyone.”
Tim Niemans foreman carpenter at Willems Bouwbedrijf
“Through the training I learned a new way of slinging, how to attach the correct lifting straps over the load and a safer way of hoisting so that you can tighten the load and nothing can fall off. The great thing is that you can immediately put the knowledge into practice. It really helps you. We should have done this sooner!”
Preventing accidents
“In lifting activities, an average of 7 fatal accidents and 36 accidents occur in the Netherlands each year, resulting in serious or permanent injuries. With this training we want to offer a more practice-oriented training intended for professionals to provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills so that common simple lifting activities can be carried out safely,” says Geert van der Linde, HSE director.
