Blankenburgverbinding part of first stage Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift 2024

The Blankenburgverbinding is part of the first stage of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift 2024. Today, the start, the so-called ‘Grand Départ’, took place in Rotterdam. The route went from Rotterdam to The Hague. Today, the peloton raced twice over the new A24 motorway and through the Maasdeltatunnel.

Scoop

The riders of the Tour symbolically opened the Blankenburgverbinding and were given the scoop of being the first and only ones to cycle over the Blankenburg connection and through the Maasdeltatunnel. And there was another first as this was the first time the start of the French women's cycling race began abroad. In the Maasdeltatunnel, the first polka dot jersey was earned. Also a unique event because never before have points been awarded below sea level for the mountain classification.

Italian rider Christina Tonetti captured the first polka dot jersey after the climb in the Maasdeltatunnel, while Dutch rider Charlotte Kool crossed the finish line first in Kijkduin, grabbing the first yellow jersey.

Blankenburgverbinding opens 7 December

After six years of work, the Blankenburgverbinding will open to vehicular traffic on Saturday 7 December. This new motorway connects the A20 near Vlaardingen with the A15 near Rozenburg. Construction consortium BAAK Blankenburgverbinding (Ballast Nedam and DEME Group) is realising this project on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat.
