Ballast Nedam pays extra attention to Sustainable Development Goals and FSC wood

Every day is sustainability day at Ballast Nedam. But in the coming days, we will step it up a notch, because of the action days of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We embrace these goals, on which we base our sustainability strategy.

The Sustainable Development Goals are seventeen goals to make the world a better place. They are a global compass for challenges such as poverty, education and the climate crisis. The goals are in line with Ballast Nedam's vision to innovate on a daily basis for a sustainable, healthy living environment.

FSC wood as one of the resources

Ballast Nedam prioritizes the use of FSC wood. This is wood that comes entirely from responsibly managed forests, leaving vulnerable forest areas alone and giving the forest the chance to recover. FSC also applies social requirements, including rules on wages and working conditions, which prevent illegal logging as much as possible.

“We use FSC wood on several projects, including Tower Ten WTC Amsterdam, Jonas Amsterdam and De Groene Loper Maastricht,” says Ferhan Deniz, Sustainability Advisor at Ballast Nedam. “As an organisation we strive for a healthy living environment. Protecting global forests is a key element.”

The use of FSC wood is a match with no fewer than forty spearheads within fourteen of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals. For example, it makes a positive contribution to prosperity, equality, nature, production and consumption patterns, employment, climate change and global collaborations.

A view on the future

As of today, the flag of the Sustainable Development Goals will be impossible to miss at Ballast Nedam's head office in Nieuwegein. These goals provide us with an important direction to act in a socially responsible manner as a company. In the coming period, we will therefore be working hard on actions that contribute to the seventeen climate goals.
