Together with the consultants and the 'DIBEC' research laboratory, Ballast Nedam Road Specialties is constantly looking for the most sustainable asphalt mixtures and road innovations. For example, an innovative asphalt mixture that requires less lighting was developed for the A9 Gaasperdammerweg.

Constructed roads require maintenance. This is important for everyone's safety. Ballast Nedam Road Specialties offers various maintenance activities for this purpose. This enables them to take full responsibility for the management and maintenance of entire areas. For various N roads, for example, they work on a contract basis for multi-year maintenance. If road markings need to be replaced, Road Specialties can also perform additional maintenance as needed.

Ballast Nedam Road Specialties is one of the four organisations in the Netherlands affiliated with the Dutch Cast Asphalt Organisation (NGO). Cast asphalt is an asphalt type used for parking decks, the platform finish of metro stations, floors of industrial buildings or even cow sheds. Road Specialities distinguishes itself with this specialist construction technique through knowledge and experience with complex environments in utility construction. Where a huge roller cannot reach due to its weight on the substructure, cast asphalt can.

Project Lead Ed van der Knoop believes guide rails are an important safety tool. "They can save a life if a road user runs off the road. The road user is, therefore, central to the installation of a guard rail. We are currently looking for innovations that require less steel but still comply with current legislation."

This expert team is responsible for the realisation and maintenance of public spaces and green areas. The activities vary from planting trees and designing growing areas to small-scale maintenance for companies or municipalities. They also construct roof gardens, parks and fauna facilities for provinces and national governments, among others.

Ballast Nedam Road Specialties has the BRL Certificate Groenkeur and Boomverzorging. This means that they can handle all projects, of course, with the right equipment. The department owns large equipment for mowing maintenance, such as tractors, flail mowers, disc mowers, curb mowers and lawn mowers. It also invests heavily in sustainability in the field of electrical equipment and bio-based fuels and engines. Meanwhile, more than sixty per cent of the total tooling has been replaced by electric versions.
