Ballast Nedam contributes to Windplanblauw: 24 wind turbines in the IJsselmeer

Green light for the construction of Windplanblauw in the IJsselmeer. Ballast Nedam will replace 28 obsolete wind turbines within this project with 24 modern and powerful turbines. For this we design and build the cofferdam structures for the turbine foundations, we realize the park cabling and we provide the connection to the substation.

Windplanblauw makes a substantial contribution to the objectives of the Energy Agreement 2013 in the province of Flevoland. The 28 wind turbines of the current “Irene Vorrink” wind farm, built by Ballast Nedam at the time, will be completely replaced. “Windplanblauw is an important project for Ballast Nedam, because it makes us a concrete part of the energy transition", says Ronald de Geus, Managing Director Ballast Nedam Infra Projects. “This is a good match, because we are specialised in the design and construction of windmill foundations and park cabling. We do this in particular at 'nearshore' locations that are located in places that are difficult to access, have a complex foundation or are in the surf near a beach. These projects require a fine piece of craftsmanship, for which we can fall back on our many years of knowledge and experience.”

The project in brief

The new wind turbines outside the dikes are part of Windplanblauw: an initiative of SwifterwinT and Vattenfall. This plan consists of a wind farm in the municipality of Dronten and Lelystad, where 74 wind turbines will be replaced by 61 larger turbines, with a total installed capacity of more than 335 MW. Of these, 37 will be on land. The 24 turbines in the IJsselmeer will be designed and realised by Ballast Nedam, with Mammoet jointly responsible for the transport and installation of the turbines.

The design work is now in full swing and work will start at the project location in March 2022. The wind farm is expected to be commissioned in the last quarter of 2023.

Collaborating from the start

“We are looking forward to working with Windplanblauw. We are confident to realise this project within the set frameworks together with our project partners”, says Ronald de Geus, Managing Director Ballast Nedam Infra Projects.

In order to arrive at a feasible and efficient working method, Ballast Nedam worked intensively on various design and construction solutions during the construction team phase, together with Windplanblauw and project partners. “It is our strength to use the knowledge and experience of all parties involved in the right way. We are aware that a project can only be successfully delivered with good cooperation.”
